The first six are drawn from the Second Schedule of the Science, Technology and Innovation Act, CAP 511. Clinical Trials and Animal Research are separate accreditation categories established in recognition of their distinct ethical and scientific considerations.<\/p><ul><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences<\/strong>: sustainable production of food, fibre and fuel; biodiversity and animal welfare in research settings.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Physical, Industrial and Energy Sciences:<\/strong>\u00a0materials, chemical processes, renewable energy, and related industrial research.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Biological and Health Sciences:<\/strong>\u00a0living organisms and biological materials, including research with human participants.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Infrastructure, Information and Communication Sciences:<\/strong>\u00a0physical infrastructure and digital systems, including data privacy, cybersecurity and societal impact.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Humanities and Social Sciences:<\/strong>\u00a0human experience and societal structures: sociology, psychology, economics, anthropology and related disciplines.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Earth and Space Sciences:<\/strong>\u00a0climate, marine science, natural disaster mitigation, space exploration and related fields.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Clinical Trials:<\/strong>\u00a0additional accreditation for ISERCs reviewing clinical trials, requiring demonstrable capacity in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and international clinical-trial standards.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Animal Research:<\/strong>\u00a0additional accreditation for ISERCs reviewing the responsible care and use of animals in research and testing.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-f735e66 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" Apply?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8e0a75c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8e0a75c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The institution hosting the proposed ISERC is expected to:<\/p><ul><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Be in good standing with the laws of Kenya.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Formally constitute the ISERC through an official institutional document (for example, an institutional research policy that anchors the committee).<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Guarantee the committee&#8217;s independence and autonomy in ethics review, as reflected in its policy or Standard Operating Procedures.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Not constitute any parallel committee or organ to review, oversee or approve the work of the ISERC.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Provide adequate and sustainable financial, human, training and logistical resources \u2014 including a dedicated secretariat, office space, boardroom and relevant equipment.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Formally approve the ISERC&#8217;s SOPs and file them with NACOSTI.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-845f1cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"845f1cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Membership Composition<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b783bc4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b783bc4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The proposed ISERC must meet the following composition requirements:<\/p><ul><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>At least seven members<\/strong>, with the total being an odd number.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>A master&#8217;s degree minimum<\/strong> for all members except the layperson(s) and the lawyer.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>A Chairperson<\/strong> trained in research ethics, with leadership skills and experience in a relevant research area (specialised health-research experience is required for committees reviewing health research).<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>At least one lawyer<\/strong> \u2014 an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>At least one technical member from outside the host institution.<\/strong><\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>At least one layperson<\/strong> who is a Kenyan citizen and not an employee of the host institution (two lay members are recommended, to preserve quorum).<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>At least two members with research expertise<\/strong> in the categories for which accreditation is sought. For health-research ISERCs, one member must be a licensed clinician.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Diversity of age, region and ethnicity<\/strong>, with at least one third of members of either gender.<br \/><br \/><em>ISERCs must also appoint a qualified Administrator to manage day-to-day operations. Administrators are not committee members; they hold at least a bachelor&#8217;s degree and relevant training in research ethics (and in GCP or animal science, where the ISERC&#8217;s scope includes clinical trials or animal research).<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-df3b982 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"df3b982\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Application Checklist<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-abe6efb elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"abe6efb\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1308448\" data-id=\"1308448\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6de3a8a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6de3a8a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Duly completed <strong>Application Form<\/strong>.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Cover letter<\/strong> from the Head of the Institution, on the institution&#8217;s letterhead.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Copy of the <strong>institutional instrument of establishment<\/strong> (registration certificate or equivalent).<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Copy of the <strong>institutional research policy<\/strong>.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">The proposed ISERC&#8217;s <strong>Standard Operating Procedures <\/strong>(see the Guidelines for recommended SOP contents).<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>List and abridged CVs<\/strong> (maximum 4 pages each) of all proposed committee members, indicating areas of expertise.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Individual appointment letters<\/strong> from the Head of the Institution.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Professional and institutional affiliations<\/strong> of each member.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Certificates of research-ethics training<\/strong> for all members except the lay member. For ISERCs reviewing health research, additional certification in the protection of human subjects is required.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Institutional profile<\/strong> (maximum 4 pages) covering background, mandate and areas of competence.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Evidence of payment of the prescribed fee.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-01a21d2
