Functions of NSEC

NSEC’s specific functions are set out in the terms of its establishment. The Committee is mandated to:

  1. Ensure scientific and ethical standards are maintained in research;
  2. Provide expert input on the review of applications for accreditation of ISERCs;
  3. Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of ISERCs;
  4. Address ethical dilemmas in research referred by NACOSTI;
  5. Review protocols referred to it by NACOSTI;
  6. Provide a forum for consultation and informed debate on ethical issues of public concern;
  7. Maintain linkages and partnerships with other scientific organizations including ISERCs; 
  8. Provide expert input on the formulation, review, and application of tools and instruments that strengthen and support research ethics of governance.

Through these functions, NSEC supports NACOSTI in upholding national standards for the ethical and scientific oversight of research in Kenya.
